Nature has always moved me, and I wanted to translate the feeling into shape and form, ever since I can remember. I never thought I really had the time to try this in a more concrete form than my early scribbles, until I retired. I started painting then, and it became a passion. Starting with landscapes, which I had always loved, of which a seasoned painter once told me is the most difficult thing to paint. I found it liberating. My medium is watercolors, but since I love working with textures, at times I have added different materials to my watercolors, such as rice paper and masa paper, which give the watercolors a fluidity and extra dimension that I very much enjoy. I have also found that doing collages opens up an interesting avenue to an artist’s creativity.

As of late, I have started working with powdered charcoal and watercolor. I find this combination of mediums most rewarding. It gives me the freedom to imagine an infinite variety of creatures, things and places. It lets my imagination fly beyond the lines to see what could be, without first knowing what is there, and creates new and strange landscapes. It also requires the discipline imposed by the charcoal lines, nooks and crannies, which can only be modified if it fits in with what the lines suggested in the first place. It’s an exploration and a journey every time I start a new piece of work. When I am done, I hope that the viewer will share the emotion that it is meant to convey, since this is the ultimate purpose of art….to establish an emotional connection between the artist and the viewer.
