FALL ART CLASSES AT THE 1870 ART CENTER

Artists at the 1870 Art Center in Belmont are again offering classes in painting, drawing and sculpture beginning this fall.

Among those teaching painting and drawing in her studio is the Center’s newest resident artist, Felicia Forte, who will be offering four classes, an expansion due to the response to the instruction she gave this summer. They will include figure painting, still life, portrait drawing, as well as outdoor painting.

Forte began her study of art at fifteen at The California Art Institute in Westlake, California, which was taken over by her Uncle after the retirement of Fred Fixler, a prominent illustrator and the school’s founder. She considers this the “lucky break” in her life, a turning point, at which a difficult childhood gave way to a time of hope and potential. After several years of training Felicia traveled, studying officially and unofficially in Florence, Italy and New Orleans, Philadelphia and New York. However, it wasn’t until she found The Art Students’ League in New York and studied under Mary Beth Mackenzie that she took her next major step in understanding, commitment and ability. Mackenzie emphasized painting exactly what she saw, which seemed to be in opposition to the illustrative quality of Felicia’s early training. Now the two schools of thought combine to shape her ability to see the true “colors” of her subject while at the same time creating work that meets her own ascetic criteria. Her classes begin August 25.

One of her drawings, Waitress will appear in Strokes of Genius 3, to be published by North Light in 2011. She will also be one of the artists featured at the King’s Mountain Art Show during Labor Day weekend. Ms Forte may be reached at (201) 463-7734.

Other 1870 artists offering classes in the fall are:
Martha Saffra, teaching classical principals of oil painting including drawing, composition, methods, color theory and technique. She instructs at all levels of ability from beginner to professional and may be reached at (650) 678-6174.

BJ Stevenson, direct carving of stone sculpture in small classes beginning Sept. 15. She may be contacted at (650) 622- 9411.
Ruth Waters, wood sculpture. She may be reached at (650) 594 -1577.

Kay Podolsky will give a class in 3- dimensional photography Wed. evenings beginning September 8.
The Art Center is located at 1870 Ralston Ave., Belmont, (650) 595 - 9679.

Plein Air in the Garden, and Beyond
The term “plein air” is derived from the French expression “en plein air” which can be translated as “in the open air.” It is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors from life, using direct observation of nature with the intention of catching a sense of natural light on the landscape. Paintings done outside are completed in a relatively short time, as the artist works to capture the scene before the light changes significantly. Artists have long painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th century working in natural light became particularly important in impressionist painting. California has a long tradition of producing great plein air painters. Learn more about this memorable art form and discover what inspires these gifted artists. This exhibit coincides with the Filoli Flower Show, May 6 through 9.
Meet the Artists Day

ArtPrize 2010: Call for Entries
Registration for ArtPrize 2010 opened last week as CEOs for Cities heard from its founder, social entrepreneur and visionary Rick DeVos, at our national meeting in New York City.
ArtPrize debuted in 2009 as a social experiment in which the world’s largest art prize would be awarded based solely on a public vote. Staged in downtown Grand Rapids, ArtPrize 2009 drew 200,000 visitors from 41 states and 14 countries to view the works of more than 1200 artists from around the world. The winner, Brooklyn painter Ran Ortner, earned the most votes and walked away with the $250,000 grand prize.
Building on the success of last year’s event, ArtPrize 2010 has already secured more than 200 venues and is now calling for artists to register to participate. ArtPrize 2010 will take place September 22 – October 10 in Grand Rapids.
ArtPrize Executive Director Bill Holsinger-Robinson tweeted our national meeting last week inviting direct inquiries about #ArtPrize on Twitter @billhr.
Artists have until 5:00 PM ET on Thursday, May 27, 2010 to register.
