Special Events

October is National Arts & Humanities Month
Held every October, National Arts and Humanities Month is a coast-to-coast collective celebration of culture in America.  Coordinated by the organization, Americans for the Arts, it is the largest annual celebration of the arts and humanities in the nation.

How is Peninsula Arts Council participating in National Arts & Humanities Month campaign?

This is the 7th year that Peninsula Arts Council has participated in this national visibility campaign. This year PAC is:
  1. Hosting an October Mixer event on October 20, 2011
  2. Working to gain national visibility for our region by encouraging other San Mateo County arts organizations to add their October event to the Americans for the Arts national online map.
  1. Meet B.O.B. October Mixer Event

“B.O.B.” is the first of six bird sculptures to be commissioned and installed along Broadway Street in downtown Redwood City funded by the Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission and produced by Peninsula Arts Council. The creative placemaking public art sculpture project, “Birds on Broadway”, is designed to further create a sense of place and spur economic activity in downtown.

Artist Joe Pogan of Portland, Oregon created B.O.B. using a variety of found metals including spoons, nails, buttons, screws and other scrap metal. Found materials add uniqueness and charm and lend an eco-friendly characteristic to the sculpture.

Come meet “B.O.B.”, celebrate this new project, network with local artists, businesses owners and City representatives and see the first bird statue by artist, Joe Pogan.

Luncheon & Private Tour of The Anderson Collection

Private Tour of The Anderson Collection

In 2009, Peninsula Arts Council hosted a luncheon and private tour of The Anderson Collection on Thursday, October 29.

The Anderson Collection
, located in Menlo Park, is one of the largest and most outstanding private collections of 20th century American art in the world.
The collection has been built over the last 40 years by Harry W. and Mary Margaret Anderson, and by their daughter, Mary Patricia Anderson Pence.

There are approximately 820 artworks by over 220 artists in the Anderson Collection.  Works from the notable collection can be seen at the Anderson Gallery of Graphic Art at the de Young Museum, as well as The Cantor Center for the Arts, and Sonoma Valley Museum of Art. http://www.aacollection.com/

The Anderson Collection graciously offered this private tour to the Peninsula Arts Council for its annual October is National Arts & Humanities Month celebration.

The tour and luncheon also marked the first of many future cultural excursions planned by the Peninsula Arts Council.  By showcasing the County’s many, often hidden, cultural offerings, PAC hopes to foster development of San Mateo County as a Destination for Arts, Parks and Culture.
