First Things First - About Joyce
Joyce Faulknor is a graduate of Academy of Art and founder of the Emerald Lake Art Academy where she taught for 10 years. Joyce has been a featured artist in Watercolor magazine. Her paintings have been published in the books Splash 8 and Splash 10 (The Best of Watercolor series), and she is the author of Stunning Crystal and Glass (all from North Light Books). She has appeared on ArtistsNetwork.TV in two video workshops: Watercolor Quick & Easy with Joyce Faulknor: Crystal & Glass and Watercolor Quick & Easy with Joyce Faulknor: Flowers. She gives workshops across the country, and is most recently working with artist Guy Magallanes on "Art2Art," a PBS instructional watercolor television series.
About Guy
Guy Magallanes is a self-taught award-winning watercolorist and arts educator. His background includes all avenues of art--acting, singing, set design, graphic design, illustration, knitting, and basket making. His watercolor paintings have been published in Watercolor Secrets, Splash 9 and Splash 10, available from Northlight Books. He also gives workshops around the country, is a regular instructor at the Redwood City Senior Center and is a co-host of the award-winning Art2Art PBS show with Joyce Faulknor.
The two have recently returned from a six- week tour co-teaching watercolor workshops in six states. When not filming or traveling, the energetic duo can often be found in their studio at 2611 Broadway Avenue in Downtown Redwood City.
PAC: The two of you have had quite an adventure working with each other, how did it all start?
Guy: In 2004, Joyce’s work was on the cover of a magazine and then I saw her work displayed at Art Center in Redwood City. I knew I wanted to meet her, so I went in to introduce myself. I was a bit shy and felt like I was about to meet a celebrity.
Joyce: It was the same time as the County Fair (August) and honestly I felt a bit disappointed that I hadn’t received a ribbon for one of the works I had submitted. There was a lot of buzz about some artist who had painted Koi. It was truly an amazing and luminous work and I wanted to know who the artist was. Then, in walks Guy and we hit if off right away. After a while, I asked for his card and he hands me one with the award-winning Koi painting on it. I was stunned and said, “You’re the one who everyone’s been talking about! You stole my ribbon!” she laughs. After that I pursued him and invited him to rent a studio space at the Art Center. It took a bit of stalking, (smiles) but I got him to come back and look at the space. He moved in that October and we’ve been collaborating ever since.
For those who haven’t yet seen the highly addicting series, Art2Art, it is a fun, entertaining PBS instructional watercolor television show currently being shown on KCSM on Saturday Morning’s at 9 a.m. The two artists host the show and demonstrate their two unique styles. Joyce paints from dark to light and Guy paints from light to dark. In between sharing excellent tips and techniques there is much laughter, bantering and story-telling.
PAC: The two of you have successfully launched two seasons of Art2Art. Please tell us how you got there.
Joyce: We both are passionate about teaching and decided that we wanted to teach on TV. We began by self-producing three hour-long episodes on Public Access TV.
Guy: We used to operate Gallery 2611 and we would turn the space into a television studio on the weekends. It took us four months, but we did it and ended up winning a WAVE (Western Access Video Excellence) award through the Mid-Peninsula Media Center.
Joyce: We then took the master of the first two episodes to Dante Betteo, Executive Producer at KCSM and pitched the idea for a series of shows. We got approval for Season 2 and began filming.
Guy: Season Two was so much easier! What took us 4 months to do on our own was condensed to 4-days with the help of the professional crew at KCSM. We got spoiled. They had snacks for us in the Green Room and a makeup artist! It was a great experience.
PAC: In addition to getting sponsorship from University Art to cover the cost of producing the two series, you sought out a new fundraising vehicle called Kickstarter.com and were successfully funded. Could you share your experience with other artists and organizations on how this funding tool works?
Joyce: Sure. Kickstarter.com is an exciting way to raise money for your idea. You write a proposal and submit it and they tell you if you have been selected. They then post your idea and you have 90-days to reach your goal. We chose a goal of $5,000. It then works like a chain-letter. We posted our goal and Kickstarter link to our blogs and on Facebook and asked people to donate and pass along the email to their friends. We offered incentives along the way for certain milestones that were achieved, for example donators would receive a DVD for a certain amount pledged, or dinner with Joyce and Guy for another amount pledged.
Guy: It was exciting. Kickstarter has a progress bar that lets you know how close you are to reaching your goal. Each day we would check and see that someone new had donated and the word of mouth excitement would build. We ended up going above and beyond our initial goal. To thank all those who helped us, we held a premiere of our new DVD at a local theatre and invited everyone to a reception.PAC: What’s next for the two of you? What are your hopes?
Joyce: We’re working on an online seminar on Artist NetworkTV.com coming up in December and then after that we want to try to get our show going national.
Guy: We might want to write a book and DVD, maybe called “The Guy and Joyce Method.”
Joyce: I hope people will someday say [of this space] “that was Joyce & Guy’s studio.” |
